Getting around in the Bahamas comes in many forms, from quaint to efficient. Travel between the Islands is easy due to the close proximity.
Number One Travel and Golf Tours Visit British Columbia

Since there are so many islands in such close proximity in The Bahamas, many visitors choose to visit more than one. BahamasAir operates scheduled flights to all major Out Islands. In addition, charter companies operate scheduled flights, and private airplanes are also available for hire. Ocean travel is a great way to get around. Inter-island mailboats run weekly to/from all islands. The mailboats are a leisurely way to get around--one-way passage to just about anywhere is to be had for around $35. Remember, these mailboats run on Bahamas time; they're a great way to slow down to the steady rhythm of the islands.

Travel on each island varies from
Taxis
Metered with rates fixed by law. Available by telephone/hail in street/ Taxi stands Surcharges over 2 people - $2.00 per person. Luggage over 2 bags per person: $0.50 per bag. No evening surcharge. Suggested Tip - 15% of fare.

Horse-Drawn Surreys
This may be the transportation of choice for love-struck couples in no great hurry. The fresh Bahamas air and brilliant days and nights make riding en plein air under a blanket of stars particularly attractive. In Nassau, surreys may be hired in Rawson Square. Approximately US $5 for 30 minutes. Rates are negotiable. Horses are rested during the peak of the day's heat (1-3 pm May to October).

Buses
All destinations one way $0.75 adults/$0.50 children (bus drivers do not give change). Buses (jitneys) run throughout the day until about 8 pm. Some hotels have free service to city center. Most of the major Islands have bus service.
On Grand Bahama, there is bus transportation between Lucaya/International Bazaar/Downtown/Eight Mile Rock Hawksbill - $0.75 within Freeport area, $1.00 outside.

Car Rental
You can also do it yourself with readily-available and reasonably-rated car rentals. If you're from the US, it may take a little getting used to, as Bahamians drive on the left side of the road. But the benefits are obvious: you can travel at your own pace, stop when you want, and someone can always stretch out on the backseat.
